A thrilling domestic drama set against the power of the wilderness, Rea Frey's Secrets of Our House is a deeply-felt novel of long-held secrets and the strength of family.
Desi is the mastermind behind her dream getaway house. Nestled high into the mountains of North Carolina, it is a sleek place, a luxurious place, a dark place.
A place full of secrets.
Secrets about the man she longs for, a man who is not her husband. Secrets about the roots of her family that must never, ever, see the light of day. When Desi and her family arrive from Chicago to spend the summer in the mountains, the seeds for the tumultuous months to follow are planted—her marriage on the rocks, not knowing which way they'll go. Her seventeen year-old daughter Jules, falling in love for the first time with a local boy—and forging a new path that will take her to uncharted places. And Carter—a man Desi knew long ago, before she expunged him from her life for good.
All hurtling toward events none of them can undo.
Engaging, propulsive, and with a dramatic, heart-pounding final act, Secrets of Our House is a dazzling audiobook, richly-drawn, that shows no matter how hard outside forces may shake you, the bonds of family are stronger than the harshest winds.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Griffin.

The 20-year marriage of Desi and Peter Wright, the couple at the center of this pleasant if predictable family drama from Frey (Until I Find You), hasn’t been good for years. Both are controlling in their own ways. Ex-military and trained in survivalist skills, Peter thrives on a regimented routine, and is both grateful and resentful of Desi’s success at her interior design firm that has brought them wealth, an upscale Chicago condo, and a lavish summer home called the Black House on a North Carolina mountaintop. Desi tries to micromanage their lives, especially that of their sullen, impetuous 17-year-old daughter, Jules. The Wrights’ plan to spend the summer at the Black House to save their marriage puts more distance between the couple and Jules, who falls in love for the first time with a local boy. The tension grows after they’re joined by an old friend with whom Desi once had an affair. This soap opera treads familiar ground along the way to a sappy, yet oddly satisfying finale. Those expecting much in the way of mystery may be disappointed. Agent: Rachel Beck, Liza Dawson Agency.

Listeners will be riveted as a woman's house of cards implodes in Frey's (Not Her Daughter) thrilling family drama. The summer before their daughter Jules heads off to college, Desi and her husband Peter realize they are at a crossroads in their marriage. The family heads to their retreat in the mountains where Desi's brother Tommy and her spurned ex, Carter, pop in and set into motion events that will test the family's bonds. Samantha Desz delivers an emotion-filled performance as Desi, who is trying to maintain her composure and control as all of the lies she has told in the past come back to haunt her. One can hear the regret, grief, surprise, anger, fear, disgust, and distress that she feels. In alternating chapters between Desi and Jules, Desz's vocal timbre changes between the two women but never loses its warmth. Jules is portrayed as strong-willed, determined, and independent, yet she is also head over heels in love, brave, reckless, and terrified with one very steamy scene. Other characters are equally nuanced. Desz succeeds in building tension and suspense as the story races to its ending. VERDICT A perfect diversion for a summer getaway.--Stephanie Bange
